I didn't see "have peace with all men whatever it costs" but "if it be possible" and "as much as is in you" which I take to mean "insofar as it depends on you" ...

Now, given that the faith itself is a "once given" that part is offlimits as to sacrifices for having peace ...

Contend basically means "quarrel" ... but obviously not for a new revelation, or understanding. Which is where Philipp II and Cardinal Beaton come off as better than John Knox or William the Taciturn.

Catholicism has both.
