On Apologists and Our Duties

THE ISSUE WITH CATHOLIC INFLUENCERS - A Vlog

OK, holding controversial opinions, is that also a sin?*

I suppose Our Lord was pretty controversial twice over in the temple.

4:59 Some converts have to get into Apologetics instantly, as per school or family.

I was, when arriving at SSHL for ninth grade, a basically Evangelical Apoologist. When I left after twelfth grade, I was a Catholic one.

With some school mates, minutes of apologetics was the most peaceful interaction we had.

I was only received after leaving High School, since I graduated in 1987 and was received in 1988.

Now, this kind of thing can happen online. I think Sips with Serra and the Jewish Catholic are in this kind of position.

And in fact, well before the internet existed, a certain Chesterton who was already doing apologetics was received in, I think, 1922. Writing was his career, he couldn't just stop and he had to explain why he left the Anglican communion. In 1922, he denounced Eugenics, before Pope Pius XI did so in Casti connubii. In 1923, he wrote a booklet on St. Francis of Assisi, and in 1925 he wrote Everlasting Man.

Another case like that was a certain John Henry, future Cardinal, Newman. However, in his case, he was given the explicit order to write before getting instruction. One often forgets that Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine is what reflects the Anglican deciding to become Catholic, while that was fresh in his memory, not the Catholic case as it would be presented by a well instructed Catholic.

"I 5:38 mean, it does, but you're not like 5:40 authoritatively trying to speak on the 5:42 church. You know what I mean?"

The exact same thing is true about Apologetics.**

Trent Horn would be in a very great pickle if his pretence that Cardinal Baronius had said "the Bible doesn't teach us how the Heavens go" in the connection of the Galileo affair had been made authoritatively on behalf of the Church.

Cardinal Baronius had died before the Galileo affair, Galileo made the quote but didn't say what highly placed Church man, it's dubious if Galileo had even met Baronius, and I think the earliest person to pin it down to Baronius (a good apologist against Protestants and a holy disciple of St. Philip Neri) was in the 19th C. Perhaps the Anfossi affair.

[end] As you multiple times referenced "the Catechism", can I hope it's that of St. Pius X, or Baltimore?

Or the one of the Council of Trent?

* She mentioned rage bait is. ** They are also not speaking authoritatively.

Other possible criticism of me. I supposedly get my information from Social Media, which is getting clicks by feeding me what I believe. Basically what Ali-Marie Ingram is saying:

@alimariehere
STOP 👏🏼 WORSHIPPING 👏🏼 YOUR 👏🏼 ALGORITHM 👏🏼 #reality #truth #fyp
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/G4guBbDvnhY

The problem with this approach is, for one, if I click a wiki article, I get the article there is, not the one the algorithm "thinks" I want to click, and for another, the algorithm cannot tell what I am going to believe and what I am going to contradict. I click Gavin Ortlund a lot because I disagree with him. I click Gavin Ashenden a lot because I agree with him. The algorithm cannot tell. And therefore you cannot tell simply from the time I spend on social media whether I get my information from trustworthy sources or not. But those who are most eager to pretend I get it from untrustworthy ones, usually what they complain about isn't my basic info, but the conclusions I arrive at from it, going beyond what my sources were clearly and openly saying. There is a difference between seeing the census of US population per age and gender in 1977 and in 2025, which anyone can do, and making the conclusion that those wanting to mentor someone have increased in comparison to a decrease in those possibly needing a mentor to mentor them, which is what I concluded.

Like lots of people who'd like to mentor me on items of the internet and what I'm doing there, who are so old they cannot tell the difference between a post I naively trusted and a post I cunningly made. Even if I'm well above mentoree age, but some crooks want just any excuse to treat a man of 57 as if he were 17.

ICE against certain states?

Why are ICE agents targeting Minneapolis?

To be fair, in Minnesota, there was also the question of Somalian fraud. However, not sure why ICE would be even as Federal Agents the best, wouldn't FBI be more on the target?

So far, the killings are on the ICE side.

This video was posted before Pretti died.

After receiving more than 220,000 applications to join ICE from patriotic Americans, ICE blew past its original hiring target of 10,000 new officers and agents within a year. In fact, we have more than doubled our officers and agents from 10,000 to 22,000. With these new patriots on the team, we will be able to accomplish what many say was impossible and fulfill President Trump’s promise to make America safe again.

10 000 out of 22 000, and Jonathan Ross is among the original 10 000, have been working for Biden and perhaps even Obama. I'd not endorse Democrats. Have you heard of Third Party?

Where I Have My Info About Gaza From

In response to Ali-Marie Ingram:

Stuff going on in the Gaza Strip…
Ali-Marie Ingram | 15 March 2025

33 AD to c. 325 AD. Christians in the Holy Land are mainly Hebrews. I know that because of Stephan Borgehammar's How the Holy Cross was Found, among other things, the Church of Jerusalem got to Pella (al Fahl, Jordan) in AD 70 and then went back (some of them, some remaining in Pella), so, there is a continuity of population in the Holy Land from Acts two and eight to Constantine and his mother. The book is mainly about how this influences her chances of finding the cross and then different accounts of what happened and how these seem to indicate the accounts go back to the actual event. The info about Christians in the Holy Land is however part of a chapter I or chapter Intro or sth.

325 AD to 637 (or so) AD. Christians in the Holy Land are mainly Hebrews, and lots more of the Hebrews are Christians after Constantine. EXCEPT, during the invasion of Chosroës II, they often apostasise and start persecuting Christians, and when Heraclius returns (connected to Elevation of the Holy Cross), they either remain Jewish and go to Persia, or they remain in the Holy Land and change religion once again and become Christians again. I know they are ethnically Hebrews, because Derwas Chitty's The Desert a City says that "they returned to the Judaism of their ancestors" rather than call it "apostasy" ... so, the Christians in the Holy Land as to ancestry were apparently something like Halakhic Jews, they could be accepted as Jews if they changed religion. The book by Derwas Chitty is mainly concerned with Egyptians founding monasticism. However when monks get to the Holy Land, they find monks already exist there, and the final chapter tells their story.

C. 637 AD. Christians in the Holy Land are under pressure to become Muslims and some actually do that. The final chapter of Derwas Chitty speaks of a Nomad tribe who used to be the "flock" of one monastery, and they get to the monastery and tell the monks "we are now Muslims, we are still your friends" ...

After c. 637 AD, the Christian population decreases and the Muslim increases, not mainly by immigration of those Soldiers, the ones who came with Omar, but by Christians apostatising to Islam. Same Christians as previously, so, mostly Hebrew.

And I have found no moment in history where this has ceased to be the case. Christian Hebrews and presumably (though this was not told by Derwas Chitty) Jewish Hebrews are the main origin of Muslims in the Holy Land (Beduins in Negev axcepted, arguably). This means, Palestinians today are Christian or Muslim Hebrews. THIS is more important than things that have happened lately, and obviously informs my stance on what has happened lately as well.

Yesterday I read in Le Monde Diplomatique (which is right now missing from the bags I took to the cyber, we'll see if I find it again when returning to my luggage) that in international law, one is supposed to determine in advance how many civilian casualties are acceptable for a given military target. US dismantling some Daesh stronghold was setting them at zero civilians for a common soldier, and five or ten or fifteen for a commander ("cadre"). Israel is in that article said to set the limits like ten civilians for a common soldier and one hundred for a commander. That would in any warfare be genocidal, but is especially distasteful when that war is in this case fratricidal.

On Harry Potter, Commenting under the Video of a Fan of Rowling

Can I Read/Watch Harry Potter as a Christian? - My Catholic Perspective
Ali-Marie Ingram | 13.II.2020
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtxTfU9MqMo

I
1:40 Well, you have not made a compact with any demon.

Now, look at the Biblical and Patristic fact that sorcery actually is (in some places and times more than others) for real, as I found out while reading or skimming the book I of Life of Moses by St. Gregory of Nyssa.

I just made a post about it:

Creation vs. Evolution : Does Magic Work (Sometimes), and Was Gregory of Nyssa Uninterested in Factual Accounts?
https://creavsevolu.blogspot.com/2020/02/does-magic-work-sometimes-and-was.html

II
2:19 JKR has now gone over to Calvinist, Kirk of Scotland.

219 propositions condemned by Bishop Tempier in Paris and England (that is all English bishops retroactively agreed with bishop Tempier) arguably condemns the denial of freewill as conclusion of God's omnipotence, would have to check (certainly condemns the denial of freewill overall).

III
dialogue

Hans-Georg Lundahl
7:33 Actually, "expelliarmus" is very much not real Latin.

Ali-Marie Ingram
Expelliarmus – Rowling herself took a liberty with this one, by combining the Latin words of expello meaning “I drive away, banish” with arma meaning “weapons”. This disarming charm makes the victim's wand fly out of reach.

Hans-Georg Lundahl
@Ali-Marie Ingram I think that is not the only one where she took a liberty.

Btw, I found one real Latin : tergeo.

Ali-Marie Ingram
Hans-Georg Lundahl Just because it’s a real Latin word doesn’t make it a spell. That was the entire point of me bringing it up.

Hans-Georg Lundahl
@Ali-Marie Ingram If you recall my op, it is, the point you made presupposed she was usually or often using real Latin.

Expelliarmus, accio vs tergeo, excrucio ... 2:2

And as a Latinist, I am both very aware that Latin is not a language automatically spelling (!) out spells, and the difference between fake and real Latin.

Now I am going to bring up the behaviour of the good guys in a new comment, I skimmed through parts of Half Blood prince yesterday, and can comment on some things on a scene by scene level.

IV
dialogue

Hans-Georg Lundahl
I haven't read them, but I wonder if I should, and wonder a bit if the stories of Ron, Harry and Hermione aren't a very mistreated triangle story, unfortunately very realistic in modern school settings ...

Shurland James
If you’re unsure, I’d suggest reading the first book and see how you like it 🙂

Hans-Georg Lundahl
@Shurland James In the first book, they are all three pretty much pre-teens?

So the problem doesn't really arise.

Shurland James
Hans-Georg Lundahl nor does it ever arise really...

Hans-Georg Lundahl
@Shurland James Come on, Ron and Harry both in love with Hermione, all three stay friends for years without her really deciding finally (for Ron) until very late on.

As said, this kind of situation is tragically realistic, but it is still bad.

That's why I'd like to know a bit more of how it is portrayed.

Confer Aragorn with Eowyn and Arwen, Eowyn very rapidly tells Aragorn she loves him, Aragorn very rapidly tells her, he's engaged to Arwen. End of story.

V
8:11 Space travel in sci fi is very much fantasy, thank you.

Voyager 1 and 2 are about 40 years in space and are not yet one light day up.

VI
I read parts of the Half Blood prince yesterday. NOT a question of reading the book or of getting a good grip on the action. Simply skimming though and looking at single scenes. I didn't take Prisoner of Azkaban or Chamber of Secrets, also in the library, since at least one of them Harry, Ron and Hermione are still children. I also didn't get any scene featuring all three of them in this second to last, but at least they are all adolescents or young adults. I'll add comments under this one for each specific.

a)
Fudge and the Prime Minister.

  • 1) I don't like the idea of a world of secrecy "appearing" only to a PM or a President ... a bit like the idea of Illuminati secretly running the world, and being very discrete. "My predecessor" (back-translating and from memory, not quoting from original) "didn't tell me" - "Well, would you tell anyone, including your successor?"

Ministry of Magic is supposed to be the "good guys" ...?

  • 2) This could be meant as satire, but the idea that steel and concrete were just fine and didn't really rust or crack, it just happened because of magic, is a bit cynical. A bridge collapsed in Italy last year or the year before, and it was because the concrete and steel were meant to be replaced after a few decades, but everyone had forgotten. We should face the fact that much modern infrastructure is indeed fragile and if neglected a safety hazard.

  • 3) And, someone pointed this out about the social ethics in Tolkien, but it is heavier here : such and such a threat to lives of Mugglers is roaming around, only Ministry of Magic can really help. In Tolkien, Dúnedain do a lot of helping decent folks by killing orcs and such outside their sight, but at least this secrecy is not the only weapon against them, see the Scouring of the Shire.

b)
In the home of Dursley's : Dumbledore makes a scene calling them cruel against Dudley.

Sure, dysfunctional relations exist, but here we have Dumbledore making a point of prolonging it in order to provide magically for Harry's safety.

And making a scene to make a point in psychology strikes me as heavily bad manners, obviously the cruelty they had done to Dudley would have been unconscious or subconscious and they would not have normal conscious responsibility for it, so why the blame?

Because shrinks like to blame people for their subconscious.

c)
Dumbledore, Slughorn and Harry : Slughorn mentions he "n'aime pas" such and such a female teacher, which may be understandable, but thereon Harry starts giggling or laughing, and has to explain he doesn't like or love her either.

[Was it Dolores Umbridge in English original?]

I mean, how repressive can that school have been if he didn't feel he could express it before "an adult" had done so? Remember, he is about one year from "of age".

d)
Just checked, yes, Ginny is both Ron's sister and eventually Harry's bride.

Fair enough as a solution to a very overloaded triangle, two young men are rivals about a young lady, man A has a sister and that sister draws man B away from the common love interest.

B U T ... we have her speaking about the time when she was annoyed at one ... Zachary Smith ... and she put a spell on him, and was afraid she would be punished for it, but the teacher approved of her tactics (and comradeship to the "crétin") and invited her for tea instead.

AND we have Ginny and Ron quarrelling over, well, Ron is kind of slut shaming her, without daring to be explicit, a magical event confirms Ginny's mindreading, and Ginny responds by virgin-shaming Ron.

Overall, part of what I had already suspected in advance is, there is a lot of virgin shaming against Ron.

Let's take Ginny's response to the "crétin" ... compare Sam Gamgee's to Bill Ferney. A very openly thrown unripe apple.

Some guys think manipulative low key and indirect violence is preferrable over open physical violence. Such guys get confirmation from this kind of thing.

Let's recall a Father Brown story by Chesterton, in which Fr Brown SJ points out that stealing golden fish is just as much stealing if done by spiritual means as it is if done by physical means. Or Aslan's words to Lucy, eavesdropping by magic is the same as any other eavesdropping.

Could one generalise : being mean by magic or supernatural or otherwise spiritual means is still being mean? I think so.

Here that teacher was telling Ginny it was OK to be mean, if she did it that skilfully.

conclusion
So, I think even apart from magic, one may have reasons to not read these books.
