The devil and in general demons, can talk to God.

He gives them some of the info that they use to pervert human minds. This is His way of punishing men and societies that turn away from Him.

The devil has planned his end times deception for a long time.

He could adapt Egyptian lies about pharaonic regnal lengths more or less to the rise of Carbon 14, so that Egyptian history starting "3100 BC" or earlier would line up, roughly with carbon dates for the earliest pharaonic times.

He could adapt (to some extent, it's falling more and more apart) the species at the time of the Flood in such and such a place to the inflated argon that would give inflated potassium-argon dates.

What he could not is change facts about language and about genes.

There is no known way in which new cell types get new genes. New cell types appearing has not been observed. Language starting from chimp grunts has not been observed to then evolve into human language. The better you know the one and the other, the better you know this cannot happen. The devil can also not change the facts of chemistry. Miller Urey conditions will synthesise some amino acids, but that's very inadequate for abiogenesis.

When God allows this, to some extent, He is allowing the non-believers to hang on to something which has some beauty. But that's also true of those who believed in Apollo. And if you think they were happy, look at Oedipous, look at Orestes. Poor guys! Apollo deceived them. Apollo ruined their lives. The first mention he gets in Greek literature is in the first song of the Iliad. Homer calls him Apollyon. I believe St. John knew Homer and St. John referred to that exact demon. The same one that Greeks worshipped to their own destruction.
