co-authors are other participants quoted. I haven't changed content of thr replies, but quoted it part by part in my replies, interspersing each reply after relevant part. Sometimes I have also changed the order of replies with my retorts, so as to prioritate logical/topical over temporal/chronological connexions. That has also involved conflating more than one message. I have also left out mere insults.

11:41 "something that didn't work out for them in the end" ...
You know, the biggest languages of Native Americans, most speakers still today, that's where the Spaniards came.
12:52 To be clear, enslaving criminals was seen as legitimate, and the fact is, Spain went to big efforts not to enslave Native Americans (except during the Enlightenment).
However, one did accept Portuguese slave trade with African slaves, which probably started out as reprisal for North African slave hunt on European Christians.
So, the Portuguese rationale started out as "hey, they are a bunch of slave traders, we'll give them a taste of their own medicine" and later it became "hey, our friend king Lumumba" (yes, it's Patrice I'm after) "assured us, these particular slaves had all been taken in just wars in defense against slave traders" ...
16:01 Sources for language sizes: wikipedia.
Sources for start of Portuguese slave trade: actually starting with anti-Catholic research mentioning a papal bull in the late 13- or early 1400's. (Dum Diversas, 1452, Romanus Pontifex, 1455)
Sources for anti-slavery stance on American natives: starting with Catholic research mentioning papal bulls to THAT effect (Sublimius Deus, 1537).
Names of encyclicals: mentioned in the wikipedia article on Dum Diversas.
